Homemade Malted Hot Cocoa Mix (Only 6 Ingredients!)

Homemade Malted Hot Cocoa Mix (Only 6 Ingredients!)

Yay! Winter is here in the PNW! FINALLY!!!! Temps in the low 30s and high 20s with little snowflakes all over my iPhone screen. I only hope it’s not a ‘chance of snow’. I’m hoping for a blizzard! (In reality, a ‘blizzard’ up here would be only an inch or two of snow on the ground for most people- I’ve got high hopes for a miracle Wisconsin type winter). I can hear the groans… Yes, I’m that person you HATE to have around in the office LOL.

One of my most favorite things about this cold, cold weather is the hot beverages! Hot toddies, hot tea, hot cocoa… I’ll even drink hot water if the mood strikes (a little something I picked up from an Army mom whose kids I grew up with- she drank hot water all the time).

This hot cocoa recipe was created after I bought a package of pre-made cocoa powder mix at a local Christmas bazaar three years ago and knew then that I could make ten times the amount I bought for the amount I paid. I mean, two cups of mix to make two cups of cocoa for $6? I’m trying to AVOID the coffee-shop prices, not pay just as much!

This recipe is simple and delicious and the best part is, there are only SIX ingredients! A finished batch makes at least 12 cups of cocoa (less if you use more than 1/2 cup, more if you use less, you get the idea). My out of pocket expenses totaled $4 (based on the scaled amount of the ingredients used). Oh, and did I mention it’s MALTED. Hot. Cocoa. I mean, come ON, what’s not to love??? … On to the recipe!

***IMPORTANT NOTE- This recipe is NOT gluten-free. The malted milk has wheat flour extracts as the first ingredient. ***

Instructions
  1. Add all ingredients to a food processor or blender. Blend until evenly mixed and milk granules are broken down. Store in an airtight container.
  2. Use 1/2 cup per 8 oz of hot water (less if you like it lighter flavored, more if you want it thicker).
  3. Top with marshmallows or a peppermint stick and enjoy!
Recipe Notes

Make a few batches for your favorite people. This makes about 6 cups of mix that can easily be stored in a jar with a lid, a ziptop bag, or a cute holiday container from the Dollar Tree. This recipe is easily adaptable. Omit the malted milk powder and crush up some peppermint candies for a peppermint hot cocoa mix. Add a touch of cayenne for a spicy chocolate cocoa if you dare. Or, if you're like me, mix this with an equal amount of mini-marshmallows and hide it from the kids 😉  What they don't know... 😉

Merry Christmas!!!
